Cosmodrome: Extraction

Summary

Company: Expression Games

Role: Junior Level Designer

Purpose: Expression Games UEFN Fortnite project

I was a part of Expression Games New IP team. One of the projects I that I helped create was a UEFN Fortnite project. I was responsible for designing the game rules for the mode, as well as creating the map and the map layout. We held many playtests in order to gather feedback and used that feedback to make iterations and improvements to the map/mode.

What is Cosmodrome: Extraction?

I worked as a Junior Level designer when I was working at Expression Games. One of the projects that I worked on was in Unreal Engine for Fortnite (UEFN). We created a 4 team multiplayer game mode where the objective was to obtain an item from the centre of the map and take it to an extraction zone to secure the item and gain points. Similar to a capture the flag game mode but with more depth.

Role and Purpose:

During my time working on this project, I was tasked with designing and creating the game rules and the map. I was the only designer working directly on this project and was given lots of responsibility from my lead, who supported me with regular reviews of my work. I was always iterating and improving the map/mode with the feedback that I was gathering from playtests.

What I did:

  • I was given the responsibility of designing and creating the game mode rules for the project.

  • With no prior experience in UEFN, I learned the engine by trialling different features to see what were our limitations for the project.

  • Created and blocked out a map that considered all of the game modes featured.

    • Made multiple different map iterations as we got closer to completion

    • Work closely with are on how art assets could be incorporated, also using art kits that the artists produced

  • Organised and ran weekly playtests, which which developed into playtests 3 times a week.

    • Gathered feedback on the map/mode and then iterated where necessary based on the received feedback.

  • I was a part of daily Stand Ups at the start of each day and Reviews at the end of every other day.

    • Stand ups were so everyone know what the other team members were working on.

    • Reviews were so we could see the progress of the other team member's work.

  • Worked and collaborated closely with other disciplines.

  • Had regular reviews with my lead.

Software Used:

  • Unreal Engine for Fortnite (UEFN) - The engine we used for the project

  • Confluence - We used to create out documentation

  • JIRA - We used to keep track of the tasks were working on

Extra details:

This project was great experience for me. I had a lot of responsibility from the very start, from designing and creating the earliest prototypes of the map and game mode, to hosting and running studio wide play tests. I was the only designer that actively worked on the mode for a long time but I had reviews with other designers from Expression Games to make sure I was taking the project in the right direction. I created quick prototypes of features we might have wanted to include and then would organise playtests to try out the features and see if we wanted to include them. There was a lot of trail and error and seeing what worked and what didn't work.

I was not a part of this project all the way to completion, however the fundamentals of the game mode/rules I created and helped shape are the same. There are also many elements of the level design I completed that have remained the same. I am very proud of the work and time I contributed to this project and it is amazing to see how it has evolved over time.

Overall, this project was great to be a part of. It allowed me to showcase my leadership and team work skills to an industry standard. And now being able to have a finished industry project that I can say I helped contribute towards is a great personal achievement.
