Shop Till You Drop

Summary

Role: Level Designer

Purpose: GitHub Game Off 2022 Game Jam

Date Duration: November 1st - December 1st 2022

This project was for the GitHub Game off Game Jam 2022 which had a theme of clichés. Working on this project was a team of three people. We created a supermarket sweep video game and the cliché was to  'Shop till you drop'. We created this in Unreal Engine 4 and was able to make it playable in browser on Itch.io.

What is Shop Till You Drop?

Shop Till You Drop was a fun game me and my friends made for the GitHub gam jam. Our goals for this project was to create a game that was playable in browser and try and get as many people to play it as possible.

Because so many people entered the jam, we were able to get a good handful of other developers to play our game and the feedback was very positive. It was a fun project to be apart of and we achieved the goals we set ourselves.

Role and Purpose:

Shop Till You Drop was a game that myself and two friends made for the GitHub Game Off 2022 Game Jam. My role in this project was a Level designer. I designed and created three different levels that were based off different styles of real life shops.

What I did:

  • Using photoshop, I designed three different level layouts for the game.

  • I started blocking out my designs in engine, iterating them where necessary so they would flow better.

  • After receiving assets form our environment artist, I did all the meshing to the three levels.

  • I also created some mechanic diagrams that my team mate could use to create add in new game mechanics.

Software Used:

  • Unreal Engine 4  - The engine we used to create the game

  • Photoshop - I used to create level and game mechanic diagrams

  • GitHub -

Extra Details:

Shop Till You Drop was a really fun project to work on as I created it with two of my university friends. I had the role of level designer and creating the levels. One of my friends was our artist, who created all of the models for the environments and the other friend was developer who created all of the actually gameplay and game mechanics.

We created this project in Unreal Engine 4.23, as this is the most recent version of Unreal that supports developing HTML5 games that can be played in browser. We wanted our game to be playable in browser to try and get as many people to play it as possible so we could get as much feedback as possible.

Our game placed 125th out of 560 entries, which is the top 23%.
